Amen

It's an odd thing, this fight within my soul,
You want the right thing so bad, but still lose control,
Your eyes on the prize, redemption's shining gleam,
But you still fall short, living out a broken dream.

I woke up this morning, fresh start, clean slate,
Swore I'd walk righteous, escape every hateful thought, word, or action, from the minute I breathed,
A perfect disciple, fully believed,
But by the afternoon, I had many slips, a few quick thoughts,
A subtle transgression, an old battle I fought,
And lost, just like that, despite every plea,
A sinner in action, though I don't wanna be,
It's a strange contradiction, this human design,
Craving a divine mind, but stuck in 'mine'.

What a mystery, how the spirit can yearn,
For purity's fire, but still get burned,
No one possesses that iron-clad will,
To outrun the dark, standing perfectly still,
We all fall short, every single one of us,
A universal truth, we sometimes refuse to discuss,
We brush it away, or try to  explain it, with logic or might,
But we're just lost in the shadows, needing God's light.

We want to do right, swear we're on the good track,
But a wrong turn's waiting, there's no turning back
From the nature of man, imperfect and flawed,
So we put all our hope, all our faith in God!,
We want to be perfect, we strive and we strain,
But the effort's in vain, we endure the same pain of falling short daily, it's a truth we can't hide,
So we put all our hope, all our faith in God, deep inside.

I've tried every method, self-help, meditation,
Strict discipline, avoiding temptation,
Thought if I just focused, if I locked in my gaze,
I could escape the cycle, break out of the maze,
But the mirror doesn't lie, it shows me my face,
Another day ending, another stumble from grace,
I don't choose the darkness, don't welcome the sin,
But it sneaks through the cracks, from somewhere within,
It's not for a lack of trying, not for a lack of heart,
Just an invisible barrier, tearing me apart,
This battle's not won by pure human might,
Only a higher power can make everything right.

The struggle is real, every single day,
Trying to be perfect... it's just not in our DNA,
Only one way to truly find peace,
Only one way to make the wild heart cease...
From these endless battles,
Put all our hope, all our faith...
In God.
Amen.
