Foolish

They say nice guys finish last, a weary, worn decree,
And as I sit and reminisce, I see a ghost of you and me.
We thought our love, a fortress strong, against the world we'd stand,
Two souls entwined, a puzzle piece, within each other's hand.

Young and in love, or so we claimed, a naive, hopeful guise,
Young and perhaps unwise, it seems, reflecting in my eyes.
Was it ever truly real, this love we swore would bloom?
The feeling's changed, the colors fade, consumed within the gloom.

I love you now as human heart, a kinship I can't deny,
But dislike you as the person, reasons reaching for the sky.
We walked on separate paths, divergent, never truly one,
Our common ground a barren space, beneath a lonely sun.

We gloried in our differences, a coolness we embraced,
Two opposites attracted, bound to an unstable base.
Turns out we both were foolish then, in love with the charade,
And in this game of hearts and minds, a heavy price was paid.
